The original Modathon Modding Competition, the Morrowind Modathons have been a proud annual tradition since 2015. Hosted each year between May 1st and June 2nd, the Modathons are a celebration, a modding extravaganza to commemorate Morrowind's anniversary, open to any and all!
Long live Morrowind and long live the Morrowind Modding Community!
The Morrowind Modathon has been the Morrowind Modding Community's premiere modding competition since 2015, celebrating Morrowind's anniversary every year on May 1st.
The competition is open to any and all mods and modders during the month of May, with a start time of May 1st at 12am UTC and an end date of June 2nd at 12pm UTC (with additional grace periods for last minute entries).
All types of mods are perfectly acceptable (with the exception of any content restrictions mentioned in rule 2). From texture replacers to gameplay tweaks to content mods like house mods, quest mods, or dungeon mods. OpenMW, MWSE, or TES3MP, all of those are fine and will be accepted for the competition!
We do ask that mods be legitimate entries with some effort put into them. Specifically, tiny low-effort cheat mods that took less than “2-minutes” to make will not be accepted for the competition. A quick lua-script mod is fine, a esp file placing a single daedric longsword on a barrel in Seyda Neen is not fine. It is at the discretion of the Modathon organizers to disqualify any mod as “low effort”.
All submitted mods must be, at least for the most part, safe for work. Questionable content is acceptable so long as it isn't the entire focus of the mod.
Mods must be playable. Incomplete demos/betas of your mods are eligible for the competition, but they must be playable. Meaning, the mod must not crash the game, corrupt save files, contain content which is inaccessible to players without console commands, or otherwise contain "game-breaking" bugs. It will be at the discretion of the Modathon organizers to disqualify any mod as unplayable.
Individual mod authors can submit up to 5 entries per day, but no more than that. Any entries beyond 5 in a 24-hour window will not be considered eligible for achievement unlocks.
Remember to give proper credit! If you've collaborated with someone, make sure they're listed on the author field (and remember there's achievements for working with other modders!), and if you've used resources from somewhere, make sure to list your sources and properly credit the mod authors who made them!
A: YES! The competition is open to any mods uploaded in the month of May, there are no restrictions regarding when you started your mod.
A: NO! The optional challenge themes are there as fun little writing prompts - if you can use them to make a mod, feel free! But they are by no means a requirement! You can submit any mod you want for the Modathon, regardless of themes.
If you do participate in the challenge themes though, you'll get additional achievement badges, that may also help boost your chances of winning one of the gold achievements at the end of the competition.
A: You'll be contacted by Darkelfguy on either Discord or Nexus Mods with a list of achievement badges. Please be patient, it often takes a week or two for us to get around to everyone, and achievement badges have to be sent manually.
Most mod authors will get their badges in two or three batches at various times during the competition, covering any additional endorsement or download achievements they may have unlocked.
A: From the start of the competition until early July, usually between July 3rd-7th. That means if you release your mod during the competition timeframe of May 1st-June 2nd, it could still unlock additional endorsement and download achievements during the extended achievement tracking period.
Whatever additional achievements your mod may have unlocked will be sent to you around mid July.
A: Yes! We have hundreds of Steam game keys for hundreds of games, spanning a vast array of titles, that modders can pick from as prizes. We may also have, on occasion, other prizes for some of the grand winners, depending on availability.
A: There's the grand category winners at the end of the competition, which is the most endorsed mod in each category, but we also have random-drawing prizes!
Every week of the competition, a new set of random-drawing winners are chosen via random-number generator. We aim for at least a 10% win rate, so if there's 70 mods released in a week, there'll be at least 7 random-drawing winners.
The random-drawing winners are published on Discord and, sometimes if Darkelfguy can remember, on the official Morrowind Modathon thread on the Nexus Mods forums.
A: After the competition is finished and the winners have been announced, your Modathon Legacy profile will be updated with all your shiny new achievement badges and your official glories recorded upon the pages of the Modathon's proud histories!
