Title: Future of ModTown 2015/2016 (Aka Plan of Action)
Post by: Turelek on June 11, 2016, 02:17:14 AM
With the administrators not giving us direction, I believe we need to open our own vent for a coherent plan of action, starting with the question "What do we do now?" Obviously, the first answer is to work on claims (and that's a good answer) but we need a bit more than that to keep going. So I feel it's time to open up a discussion where we can all put in our thoughts and come up with a good answer to the question we are facing, as this question might be just as important as the claims we are all working on.

With those three said, I feel now it's time we suggest and create more ideas.

Hmm, I am finding myself uninspired right now when it comes to this, but I will chew on it to see if I come up with anything. One idea I have had for a while though, is any unclaimed and unfinished claims Could be made into little scenic garden areas.

I'm afraid I won't much help with PR, I tend to fail at promoting my own stuff... I keep my mind open for ideas.

I've definitely forgotten about the garden idea and that is a viable alternative.

I was thinking that if Darkelfguy made another modathon progress video, we could snag in a few more of those willing to help in the project. That's what I think we need. More people. As most of you know, theres only a select few of us actively working on modtown, and we are not going to finish this whole thing alone. I am still very happy with ModTown, and believe we can make the right comeback. Right now I will be working on my CC Dining Hall claim, and once that's finished I may take up some more claims, but again, we need more people. About the PR, Darkelfguy is the perfrect candidate, but he's not been on the forums.

Welcome back, and that's the problem, we need to figure out how to work around DarkElfGuy not coming on, since slowing down is the reverse of what we want. I checked DarkElfGuy's YouTube channel recently and I have not found any ModTown things for months which is another concern to me, hence the PR question.

Would it be possible for someone else to make a trailer for us? I have no skills or know how in making vidoes, but could someone do one?

I do have a desktop camera recorder/editor, but it does not work well in-game, though I know of a few other recording materials.

What about Publick Occurances? He's made a plot here on ModTown and has an Elderscrolls YouTube channel where he makes Machinima-type shorts with Oblivion and other TES games. I'm sure he's a viable option.
His account on this website is Publick Gamer.

Well, we need to contact DEG to get back on these forums. Someone should leave a comment on his new YouTube video asking him to return, I know he reads the comments.

While I'm not intending to poo-poo that idea, I must point out that he's been here, and he's read the discussion about the way things have been going, he just remains silent about it for the time being. I know he's busy with Modathon videos, but that's no excuse for not saying anything. And besides that, if he's going to put so much of his time into his channel, which I do think he should, that clearly means that he doesn't have time for this project, and should hand the reigns over to someone else, probably Turelek. And if he has a problem with that, he really should have thought about that before taking on this project while trying to broaden his channel, just like I should have thought about it longer before joining. It's nothing personal, I have no problem with DEG, but this silence needs to end, and so does the stagnation. This isn't a province mod, this is Mod Town 2015, there's literally a year attached to its name, the whole idea is to have it come out at a certain time, be a snapshot of the community as it was/is that year it was started and ended. Need I remind everyone that the original plan was to get this done by late December of last year. I know I was the one who suggested extending the deadline, but I was thinking February. Not May. And I did not suggest or approve of the plot expansion. I had a feeling that was going to be a mistake, and it was. I wanted us to have a little bit more time to do the same amount of work, not a lot more time to do a lot more work.

This is to say nothing of the people who've contributed very little. There's 70+ members, and yet there's still some public buildings which have been on the map since the beginning that no one has ever worked on. There's people here who have no posts. There's people who have claimed stuff and posted no progress, ever. I may not have finished everything I started, but at least I actually tried to take on too much. There's a reason my claiming of the Consortium HQ was literally "Fuck it, I'll do it myself". I was quite annoyed that a high priority building had no one working on it. So I grabbed it, along with the Mages Guild, Assembler's Lab, Dwemer Airship, Autotower, Telvanni Airship, and Smuggler's Den (though that was much later).

But you know what? We could have done something about all that a long time ago if our leader had had more time for us, and was more willing to listen when it became clear that changes needed to be made. And that's one of several reasons why I wish I had thought about it longer before joining. I should have seen this coming. I should have seen that DEG was simply not going to be able to contribute to the community with MMS, and run Mod Town 2015 with the same level of attention. He needed to be our hype guy, not the guy in charge.

This will be my final post here, as I need to finally put this behind me, for good. I don't regret giving this project a shot, I learned quite a bit, and I will always value that experience. I also appreciate what DEG tried to do, he wants to make MW modding more exciting, and he has done so. But the man with the idea is not necessarily the man who should run things. I should know, I'm like that. I don't belong in a position where I'm telling any one of you what to do. I may be more available, and have a keener eye for potential problems, but I'm also mean and change my mind too many times for people to keep up with.

Best of luck to you all, I have a feeling you're going to need it. Anybody needs me, I'll be on the official forums, moving on with my modding life. Peace.

Thank you for the words Autoclock, he has been here indeed now that I check, though his silence is disturbing. As for the plot expansions ... well everyone knows my thought on those, I was initially for them but now that is an issue, and no longer a looming one, also as pointed out we're not Skyrim: Home of the Nords/Tamriel Rebuilt/etc, though we have definitely done something the original ModTowns have not (subtly, this will be expanded on).

Now, for the modders who were/are inactive, I wish we had more emails, then we could ask if they want to join us or are truly done. I know some, like PrincessStomper can be reached on their websites. I have tried to reach Melchior Dahrk time and time again only for him to not respond, I assume he is busy with all his mod projects. I feel we may need to open up some topics to revive interest on Nexus, the Bethesda Forums, Fliggerty, and other websites. Though we should also try to contact Publick Gamer and/or DarkElfGuy one last time and see if we can get a video together, if not we could assemble some of our best pictures and use this, or even make a slideshow out of them.

Now for that thing that the other original ModTowns have not done, so far we have seen it as a bit of a bad thing, but we're in 2016 now. Autoclock points out that we were originally slated for release in December of 2015 and to be a snapshot of 2015, but now we can say we are a snapshot of 2015-2016, a title that should not be looked down upon or ashamed of, we should not lose hope. We may be overdue for our original release of December, but now we can add another four digits to our title. There is no ModTown 2004-2005, ModTown 2006-2007, and so forth.

Point is, the rest of us that are still here (save for Autoclock, may he find better luck in his other ventures), we should take some pride in what we are doing. I've probably said this before, but let's not lose hope, and let's gain some new modders to ModTown 2015, though we still need to address these issues.

Goodbye Autoclock, goodluck to you, too. However, I do have good news. I watched DEG's new modathon video today (Denaes lucky coins), and at the end he mentioned upcoming videos. In that short list he mentioned a Modathon progress update! Looks like DEG will be coming back for an update. Sad thing is Melchior hasn't merged my plot yet, and I really would like to see it in the video.

Sad to see you go Autoclock, good luck!

A progress video would be fantastic. As for your claim I don't think that it needs to be merged to be showcassed, I had provided previews for my claims for the previous showcases, and they weren't merged at all.

It's sad to see people going from the project, but I understand why. I came into this expecting regular email updates, updates to the forum, etc. Which is what we got in the beginning, but as the release date got expanded the admins grew quieter. It's been kinda frustrating. Personally, I'm wondering what buildings in the town proper still need to be constructed, who's building them, how many plots are actually done, and how many people are still interested in working on the project.

I think maybe we should have another demo, and have everyone post what they made so far. Then make an updated map of Modtown, labeling what plots are still needing to be completed, which are done, and which are being worked on. I guess the gist of what I'm saying is before we go any further we should figure out how much work is left to be done.

Hopefully we can get this going again. Hate to see all this effort and team spirit go to waste  :'(

Nice to see a post from you, and we're all in agreement about this. We're trying to rally ourselves back together (though you have probably noticed) and centralize again. I do regret that we didn't catch this sooner, then it might have been not as serious had we acted a month or two ago instead of now. I do think that we need another admin who can be more active in the project, as the other admins seem to be more busy with other projects and we need daily checkups and communication rather than periods of silence such as this.

Onto work that needs to be done - we could definitely update to see what else needs to be done. I still believe we should cut ambition of the project as there is a lot more than our small team can handle right now, we expected to get more than who actually showed up unfortunately (and which nobody can be blamed for). We have a map that is similar to what we might have from a few months ago on these forums though.

We will succeed in the end, there is nothing in the way besides size and motivation, the latter of which I have plenty of right now.  :)

I think we can get things back together, we just need an active admin, like you said. Someone to start adding due dates, creating demo events, encouraging members to stay active, and figuring out what plots still need to be completed

I agree with you on that ambition comment. We really need to just focus on what we already have, instead of burning our energy adding content. Quality over quantity you know? Also, anyone remember the map of Modtown listing the plots? I had an idea of something like that, but it also included updated information on who was working on what plot and what was available for grabbing. This could also help us discard plots that no one is interested in using (I think I heard someone on the forum talk about using these plots as gardens?) Lastly, being better organized will give us a good idea of how much time we'll be able to finish the project. I know it seems like a lot of clerical work and not a lot of modding, but one of the major complaints of Modtown was that no one knew what was going on.

A lack of feedback from the admins was what caused me to start becoming apathetic to the project, but I'm glad to see people still interested. It makes me want to do major renovations to my plot  :D (must reel back ambition)

I took the plot map for Modtown, went through the "Modder Claims" thread and made a list of what plots that have and have not been claimed. Sorry for the poor quality. The idea hit me in the wee hours of the morning, and I felt the urge to get it out there as soon as possible (that's why some of the names are highlighted in white). It seems like a good portion of the town proper is yet to be claimed. I'll probably make a separate list for the public plots sometime. I hope this helps us know where we are.

Nice map ShylyMrWolf! most of the unclaimed areas seem to be mostly gathered in one spot which might make the garden idea a very good possibility, it could even work as a park too. We may need to scout the forums and see who hasn't posted in a while, or their claims, and see if they're still with us or if we might have to cut them off and figure out what else to do, provided we aren't able to reach them (though I'm sure they have Forum accounts over at UESP, Fliggerty, Bethesda, Nexus, and so on).

Dungeon 3 was claimed by me a few months ago. It's done and I uploaded it almost one month ago.

Thanks for the update :)

I looked at the dungeon threads and it seems like all of the dungeons have been claimed. It is as such

Mzark Arkngleft - Fulgore (Completed)
Smuggler's Den - Autoclock (His thread doesn't mentioned if the dungeon is completed, does anyone know if that's the case?)
Tower of Baelgon - Melchoir Dahrk (This thread also doesn't say)
Zalonbael - Darkelfguy (The thread only mentions it being 38% complete)
Dzrethurzch -- Dormichigan64 (The original post for this thread says the dungeon is on Plot 34, which has also been claimed by LadyPhoenixFireRose. DarkElfGuy confirmed both submissions, so I don't know if that was an error on his part or if Dormichigan64 and LadyPhoenixFireRose were working together. I looked at the dates though and Dormichigan64 claimed the plot first on July 16, 2015 and LadyPhoenixFireRose claimed it May 4, 2016)

As you can tell, excluding Fulgore's, I can't tell which dungeons have and have not been completed. If anyone on the forums knows for certain which have or have been completed, let me know as soon as possible,

Thanks :)

There is a more recent claims map the Melchior did not too long ago, that shows many more sections as being complete.

As for Plot 34 it is mine and mine alone, I had claimed it first, Dormichigan64 had also tried to claim it, but hadn't realized it had already been claimed. He decided to make his claim strictly a dungeon that didn't have a claimed spot on the map. All the dungeons would be claimed, as they are to be suggested by the modder who claims them. So Modtown could end with several or very few dungeons.

Edit, the only dungeon I know for sure is complete is Melchior's.

I have plot 32.  I'm colourblind, so I can't really tell whether the map shows this or not, but my plot is pretty much completed (not sure if MD ever merged it into the masterfile, but I still have the esp if not).  The only thing left for me to do is to add in one or two small quests (at present my plot is closed off from the world, and requires a quest to gain access).  I haven't done this yet because I'm waiting for when we have more of an idea of the main quest (if we're still doing one) before writing my own quests, to see how they can fit in.

Also, I've introduced a potential antagonist character who I'd be happy to put into whatever quest we end up going with -- see my thread here: http://darkelfmodding.com/forum/index.php/topic,239.0.html

So, when you feel you're ready for quests, please feel free to contact me on the official forums (or just post here -- I check these forums every now and then).  I would be most happy to finish writing out the quests and dialogue for my own plot and fitting them into the MT15 main quest.

Unfortunately, I just don't have the time to contribute much in a bigger sense.  I'm really sorry about this -- DEG actually brought me on board to help with quest-writing initially, but I have so little time for my own project, which has already been going on for years, that I just can't afford to sign up for another big project.

However, I'm happy to help out in small ways, if you have no one else who can do such things -- scripting, very basic mesh editing, dialogue for the odd NPC etc.

So, I'm sorry about that.  My best wishes to everyone involved.  Please don't hesitate to contact me for help with those small things I mentioned, or for adding quests to my plot!

Hey everyone, sorry for not being around much these past couple of months, I understand there's been a fair bit of confusion, and I'm going to try and rectify that as much as I can and hopefully get us back on track to finish ModTown 2015. I do apologize, I haven't had time to read through everyone's posts yet, so I may have to reply to specific questions or points raised in this thread at a later date.

Now I've already posted a list of priorities and deadlines in the new announcement thread, so if you have any suggestions or questions, I'd love to hear them. Right now our number #1 priority should be modder plots and public building claims. Dungeons and quests can wait a bit, since we're going to need a finished town before we can really start adding in lots of quests anyway.

The second thing is that there will be a ModTown 2015 progress video currently set to go live this Friday. It would've been sooner, but I've been out of town this past week and couldn't get video production done in time. As such, if there's any last minute additions you'd like to add, feel free to post files below and I'll try and get them all included. The last progress update video was in December, and the last ModTown trailer was in March, so obviously we have a lot of ground to cover in terms of PR, and again I have to apologize for not keeping up with everything.

And the third issue at hand has to deal with bringing on some new admins, since I almost never have time to keep up with everything as is, and Melchior's been MIA for the past few weeks (I haven't gotten a single reply to any of the messages I sent him, so I'm guessing he's just busy with real-life at the moment). Ideally, I'm thinking we should add three new admins, one for each major department; Interiors, NPCs/Dialogue/Quests, and Dungeons. Let me know if you're interested in any of those positions and we can try and sort out what organization responsibilities each admin should have.

I'd like to volunteer for that one, DEG.  This is one of the few sights I actively frequent (seeing as how I desperately want to see the ultimate version of ModTown), and especially...I could help to monitor (and merge) claims, if I had access to the master version(s)....

Status check:

Let's see where we are currently, we have slightly more than two weeks left to work on personal/public claims for ModTown 2015, and I think it's important we rally up again and find out how we're all doing. Now, I've been a bit busy with work lately though I've still been chipping away at the Community Consortium, nothing noteworthy of being posted yet though since my last update on the Consortium thread however.

Over the past few weeks I've been battling with a mesh trying to reduce it from over 2 million polygons down to less then 30,000 trying to keep it good looking, while not overloading one of my interior cell, as a result of my efforts there are now TWO new clutter items, plus another unrelated clutter Item in my claim. Still no progress on further dialog, and I still need to re-fill some of the containers that belong to the individuals living in my claim. Progress = slow, but steady. Hoping to get more dialog from my Fornit soon. Also trying to work up the gumption to rework some of my textures on some of my weapons meshes.
Clutter is coming along slowly also.
