Title: [Modder Claim] Plot 26 - Autoclock
Post by: Autoclock on August 01, 2015, 09:33:12 PM
Not sure what's going to happen with this plot, I just want to stake my claim on it before I lose my opportunity to get in on some town action, since my dungeon shenanigans aren't going to keep me as busy as I had once thought they would.

Long time ago, way back in the year 2010, before most of you were born, I made my first mod ever. It was, predictably, a house mod. A house mod the size of Ebonheart, which crashed the game often, was very not tastefully-crafted, and generally made no sense.

I did not hold onto this beautiful disaster, as I hadn't possessed such an appreciation for my failures at the time, but, to a small extent, I can bring some of that insanity to Mod Town. Behold, the Autotower:

Expect shenanigans on the inside of this thing.

That is one absolutely fantastic looking airship, I like the idea of the Telvanni getting some airship love too.

Post by: Autoclock on August 05, 2015, 11:28:23 PM
Thanks. I realized that I'd never seen an airship made Telvanni-style, so I did it myself. It goes well with my tower, I think. For anyone wondering how it flies, its caretakers simply mix levitation potions in with its water supply. Which has me wondering why no ever thought of this before. I mean, the Telvanni have been growing their homes out of the ground for who knows how long now, surely one of them must have had a clumsy servant that spilled a potion onto the floor and caused it to do something magical, like turn invisible, or summon a Daedra. I'm going to have to work that into my tower somehow.

Decided to rebuild the tower, this time as a single model:

Obviously it looks more Dwemer now, but when I get further along, it'll start taking on a more hybridized appearance.

Autotower is also going to sit inside a pool of hot oil, and slowly rotate.

In terms of blended architectural influence, yes. I'm not going to use the exact same pieces the rest of the way, though, because the first tower was more of test run that would be good enough were I not me. But I am me, and I always think I can do better, because, well, 99% of the time, I can. Just look at this doom train I made months ago:

Not terribly intimidating, right? Now check out the one I built right after:

Yeah.

A running theme inside Autotower is going to be "things that combine into other things", one of which being this Centurion Spider Cruiser here. Basically it just wheels itself around and looks weird.

Your work is gorgeous! The trains and centurion look badass. I like the towers, too. Now I need to think how I will fit my bucolic vanilla looking imperial housing style smithy (plot 28) in this awesome neighbourhood. Maybe I'll need to change concept entirely.

Edit: I'm thinking of something like a large scrapyard filled with unneeded and broken parts thrown away by the inhabitants of your tower (whoever they may be), and the smithy itself, placed closer to the upper edge, would go like this letter "Г" turned to the right.
Title: Re: [Modder Claim] Plot 26 - Autoclock
Post by: Autoclock on August 27, 2015, 06:46:50 PM
Thanks. Keep in mind, there won't be any trains in Autotower (or will there?), but I do want to implement one elsewhere in Mod Town.

The residents (who are weirdo wizards) do indeed toss a lot of stuff when they get bored/break things/stuff doesn't go as planned/etc., so yes, a nearby scrapyard would make sense.

Also, just noticed that I didn't post a pic of the (more) completed Autotower, so let's fix that:

Bit dark, but here's an aerial view:

The tower will float above ground, so that it's not encroaching on the surrounding area.

Title: Re: [Modder Claim] Plot 26 - Autoclock
Post by: Autoclock on September 20, 2015, 08:29:29 PM
They DO spin around like blades. The ones attached to the model right now are just for display, though, since they have to be separate in order to kill you, and I like to design my layouts in NifSkope before I build an interior in the CS. They turn out better that way, in situations like this.

Title: Re: [Modder Claim] Plot 26 - Autoclock
Post by: Autoclock on November 02, 2015, 03:59:14 PM
Been awhile since I updated this thread, mostly because I've been using the gallery to show my progress, but today I finally have some info, rather than a screenshot of something.

I had held off on talking about this, but I think the time has come to reveal a bit more about the people who live in Autotower. They are known as the Brothers of Brass. Like many other Argonians, they were taken from Black Marsh at a young age by Dunmer slavers and forced to work fields and clean houses. But unlike other Argonians, the brothers were one day purchased by a Telvanni wizard, who had no use for servants, but did need some living subjects to experiment on. Those experiments changed the brothers forever, physically and psychologically, giving them amazing abilities, a greater sense of ambition, and more than a few personality disorders. Eventually the brothers trapped their wizard master in Quagmire and set off on a series of adventures that led to the creation of Autotower, but those are stories to be told later, by the brothers themselves.

The brothers do not look normal in any sense, and as such, they are special creatures, rather than NPCs. Two of them, Leggo-My-Eggo and Bought-This-On-Sale, are of a typical size for Nirn, but the third, Woostah, is huge. (Kudos to anyone who gets the reference.)

No one else lives in Autotower, though that doesn't necessarily mean there aren't other residents, if you get my meaning.

That is all for now. Happy modding.

Returning to this until it's finished. Three will be three interiors, one for each brother. I'm working on Leggo-My-Eggo's Room right now. Not ready for screenshots, I have to re-evaluate my approach because at the moment it's way too laggy. Stay tuned.

Title: Re: [Modder Claim] Plot 26 - Autoclock

I think what I'm going to end up doing is ditching the more resource-heavy models, like the Cores and the Bell Cages, and putting in way more of the not so heavy ones, like the Bells and the Ballasts.

Less than a hundred objects, but it acts like there's more than a thousand. Something has to be done about that.

Did you try combining shapes under the NiNodes? That may help with performance. Oh, and making sure that you have a collision mesh.
Title: Re: [Modder Claim] Plot 26 - Autoclock
Post by: Autoclock on April 20, 2016, 12:11:11 AM
I always have a collision mesh, I wouldn't be able to move anything in the CS without one.

I found an alternative method of optimization: cut down on the use of so many fucking NiNodes. You wouldn't believe how much it helped to separate the lights from the tower piece and make them into actual lights. Your grates came in handy for making better rigging, too.

I think this is a big step in the right direction. It looks better, and the lag is minimal. But of course, I'm still not done. Now I get to make the walls tomorrow. Yay.

My idea for the walls and the bells has worked out beautifully, but screenshots really don't do them justice, so tonight I shall be recording a video, after I make some adjustments. If I can get my CD-drive working. If not, I suppose I could recruit someone else to do it. We'll see.

Title: Re: [Modder Claim] Plot 26 - Autoclock
Post by: Autoclock on April 21, 2016, 11:42:02 PM
Okay, Leggo-My-Eggo's Room is pretty close to completion. The lag is back, but that's probably mostly the 24 creatures in it, and it looks the best it ever has, so whatever. The walls are in place, they look awesome, and it's lit up enough for my satisfaction. Might need to adjust the colors and illumination radius, but that can wait until people see the video and throw tomatoes at me give criticism.

Speaking of which, it will definitely need to be recorded by someone else, because my CD-drive is being about as difficult as shooting a bullet out of the air with another bullet while a crazy guy on meth tries to stab you. It's also going to have to wait until I finish Leggo-My-Eggo himself, because I want him to be present, and he needs a re-design. And dialogue.

So I'll see you in a couple of days. Maybe.

Thanks. A lot brighter than I expected, though I'm not sure I want to change that. I forgot to put the rotate script on the little airship, but everything else works. I was also expecting the Logical Note Players to wander about, I may have messed something up there.

Debating on whether or not there should be custom music in there, or if I should use a silent track instead.

I think at the least those bells should emanate some ambiance noise. I think if you combined some bell noises with a silent track and could pull it off, it'd be pretty awesome.

Woostah's Room is currently in progress. No screenshots yet, as I need way more work done, but it's off to a good start. My original plan was to use the tall tower interior full of pipes and columns you see in one of the progress videos, but now I'm going with a much more... scary-looking approach. You'll see.
Title: Re: [Modder Claim] Plot 26 - Autoclock

Well, done a lot of experimenting, and a lot of thinking, and I've found the right kind of theme to go with for Woostah's Room, but it's going to be a bit before I have anything substantial to show off. I can tell you that the place is definitely going to be spooky, and you can count on dying in it, probably several times.

I was going to hold off on this, but I think my stuff is scarier when you DO know what it looks like, so here it is, the new model for the biggest and nastiest of the Brothers of Brass, Woostah:

That's right. I turned him into a train. Still needs work, but you get the idea. His room is a decrepit, creepy-looking train station that has a ton of skeletons, lost souls, and heavily damaged train cars all over the place. See if you guess why that is...

Well, I had a feeling this day would come at some point. I have officially lost my job, and, for someone like me, who doesn't have much going for them, that's a big problem. Enough so that I simply do not have enough free time to work on comparatively silly things like mods.

I want to, and will, return at some point, but I have no idea when that will be, so I wouldn't count on it happening within a few weeks or something. If someone wants to pick up where I left off, on any of my claims, let me know, and I'll provide the necessary files.

Sorry about this, but there wasn't anything I could do about it. Forces beyond my control. Best of luck to everyone.

I have a job again, so I'm almost ready to come back to modding. Just have other things to deal with first. Don't know which mod will get done the soonest. I just work on whichever project I feel like at any given moment. Best way for me to make progress. As for what else I have going, there's my would-have-been-a-Modathon-entry (http://autoclockreturns.tumblr.com/image/145139118554), and my Sotha Sil project, which I've neglected for far too long. I have a new plan for that one, basically the player explores a previously inaccessible part of the Clockwork City, and has to solve puzzles and whatnot. Keeps the physical scale down while allowing me to go "big on the depth", as it were. That approach has been working quite well for The Magic of Grandreach. I'll be putting plenty of old models and ideas to use, hopefully. Might even be a train-to-train battle. Maybe.

In all fairness, it could very well have been much longer than that if I hadn't gotten lucky. Very lucky.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out different ways I can shorten the development time on Autotower without sacrificing what I'm trying to accomplish. Basically, there's a story to be told, and I have a lot of options on how I can tell that story. It's just a matter of finding the least taxing one. I'm thinking that clicking on each of the podiums causes the player to be transported to different places, or perhaps the same cell, just with different things going on in it, like chapters they're reading. Or watching, rather. I once had the temptation to make the disturbing dreams of the MW Main Quest into fully interactive sequences, I might bring that idea into this. We'll see. For now, I have more models to make, like always. :/

Very well then, I was thinking well, the remaining members (including myself) will need to discuss our plan of action as it seems neither DarkElfGuy or Melchior Dahrk seem to want to be a part of this currently, and stagnation has gone on long enough. Back on topic it will be nice to see your plot claim complete, from the images and videos it looked interesting.  :)

I have no intention of doing anything beyond finishing up the inside of Autotower. Don't feel that YOU should be left holding the bag, it should be DEG, but that's not happening, and for the same reason it should be: HE'S NEVER FUCKING HERE. Actually, he is, but he lurks in complete silence while this shit slowly falls apart. I've seen him look at our discussion about the future of this project several times, with the slimmest bit of hope he'll finally fucking say something, but he doesn't. Not here, at least. He posted on the official forums that about a dozen claims got finished since the last progress video. No shit, the last one was in December. And we still have two dozen plots that have no work being done on them whatsoever, that we needed to get rid of long ago, but we're not going to talk about that, are we?

I know he's promoted my stuff a great deal, heavily featuring my airships and towers in the videos, which I appreciate, but that doesn't make up for the fact that we can't count on him to actually lead this project. He's a fine hype guy, but that's it. His channel takes up too much time for him to be in charge of a project like this, and quite frankly, I think MMS is doing way more for the community than Mod Town is.

I no longer care if/when he finally speaks up. My own personal work is more important to me now, and it's going to stay that way.

I should have listened when Trainwiz said "Don't."

A very strong written post, I respect your intentions and I did not mean to ask you to do more if it sounds like that. Regarding the issue with DarkElfGuy, I wish we had acted sooner and came up with a plan earlier after the first two weeks of him not coming. If he won't come, that's his choice and I respect that too, I won't talk about Morrowind Modding Showcases.

Right now, this is all I have to say.
